We then welcome Mike Stura of Skylands Animal Sanctuary. The Wantage, New Jersey, sanctuary’s latest resident is Freddie, the steer who escaped from a Queens, NY, slaughterhouse last week and made headlines all over the country.
Quotations from the interview with Mike: (when he went to the slaughterhouse to try to get them to release Freddie) “I stayed in the truck outside the place till the next morning.” (Mike went on the say that doing that was no big deal, but this is January in New York. It’s a big deal.)
(On “humane” meat) – “There’s no humane way to take someone’s life who’s healthy and wants to live.”
(On becoming vegan) – “Then I learned that if we had milk, there was a baby somewhere who didn’t.”

Skylands is some 57 miles from Manhattan. They’re closed for visitors this winter but will reopen in the spring for educational tours from 11 to 5 every Saturday and Sunday. They are registered 501(c)3 charity, should anyone want to adopt an animal there or offer other financial support to their work.
