Mark and Michelle Pruitt, co-founders of Uplands PEAK Sanctuary, Indiana’s First Farmed Animal Sanctuary. Uplands PEAK has been in operation since October 2013. PEAK is in process of raising funds and planning to move to a 105-acre farm in Freedom, IN. Donations to our “Be Bold” Campaign to move to Freedom,IN will be matched up to $113,000! https://fundly.com/peak-is-moving-to-freedom

Michelle has always felt a deep connection and respect for animals, but she wasn’t aware of the consequences of her food choices. She was a vegetarian for over six years but still didn’t have the knowledge of how animals are treated for food products. Finally, upon reading Farm Sanctuary, by Gene Baur, she learned the horrors of how animals are bred, abused, and slaughtered for food products, and immediately went vegan. She tried to find a sanctuary close enough to volunteer but there wasn’t one.  It was then that the seeds for Uplands PEAK were planted.

Mark became was initially exposed to vegan living by his wife, but his 2011 transition was also greatly influenced by the Gary Yourofsky video, “The Greatest Speech You’ll Ever Hear.” Mark states, “It had always been my dream to create and work with a retreat center of sorts, as a career change. Becoming vegan allowed me to combine this desire with a cause I was passionate about. It is also really exciting to be on the cutting edge of a revolution that can literally transform the world for the better, simply by making a different food choice.”

Michelle and Mark purchased the property for the Sanctuary in 2012, and began the process of creating a registered non-profit. Michelle completed an intensive immersion of animal care and shelter management at Woodstock Farm Animal Sanctuary in New Paltz, New York, to prepare for running her own sanctuary. Additionally, she has visited other sanctuaries and conducted substantial research on farm animal care and advocacy.
