They’re symbols of peace, but doves & their kin often find themselves in need of our help, and Elizabeth Young of Palomacy Pigeon & Dove Adoptions fills us in; then we meet Kitten the Juice Pirate (Elicia Barbossa), juicing superstar who left behind morbid obesity thru fresh juices & a plant-based lifestyle.

In 2007, animal lover Elizabeth Young accidentally discovered a big, deadly gap in the animal welfare community when she met a sweet, smart, unreleasable pigeon scheduled for shelter euthanasia. Nobody was helping domestic pigeons & doves who, bred to be used for “sport”, hobbies & businesses, invariably got hurt, lost or displaced. They were treated as disposable. Inspired by all the other rescues helping animals to get out of shelters alive, she created Palomacy Pigeon & Dove Adoptions & has been helping people help birds every since.

Blast from the past! ~ All kinds of birds and animals need rescuing. Only really longtime listeners were around when I recorded this interview with arm wrestler, recovering drug addict, tattooed-all-over bunny rescuer, Big Bald Mike (his moniker today is Bonebreaker Barbell).

A shoutout to our sponsor, Complement. Developed by vegan dietitian Dr. Pamela Fergusson, and the NoMeat Athlete, Matt Frazier, Complement enables you to get your vitamin B12, vitamin D3, and the essential Omega 3 fatty acids (DHA & EPA) in a totally vegan form that you just spray into your mouth once a day and know that your already great diet now has the full complement of essential nutrients. Click here for more info and to order. Use the code MAINSTREETVEGAN for a 10% discount.

And now the good folks of Complement have a new product: Complement Plus. While everyone agrees that B12, vitamin D3, and the essential Omega 3 fatty acids are nutrients people eating plant-based diets (and a lot of other people besides) should not overlook, there are some other nutrients that it’s also easy to be short on, even with a well-chosen diet. To tackle this, Fergusson and Frazier joined forces with Joel Kahn, MD, and together developed Complement Plus, a supplement in tablet form that includes all the nutrients in Complement spray, along with zinc, iodine, selenium, and vitamin K2. Essential for blood clotting, healthy bones, and heart health, the only plant-food source of vitamin K2 is natto, an obscure, fermented soy food and one that is definitely an acquired taste (and smell). To get Complement Plus at a discount, simply go to www.alpineorganics.co (where you can order regular Complement, as well), but this time your discount code will be MAINSTREETVEGAN+.
