I remember when I first laid eyes on Dr. Klaper. It was 1984 and he showed up at Vegetarian Summerfest. My first thought: “We’ve got an MD now. Everything is going to change.” And to a large extent, that’s happened. Imagine it: a time when you couldn’t find a medical doctor at a vegetarian event! Those days are long gone and Dr. Michael Klaper is one reason why. He has practiced plant-based internal medicine for decades and now, in his 70s, is turning to legacy work: going to medical schools around the world instilling the doctors of the future with the importance of plant-based nutrition for optimal patient care and planetary survival.

???? ???? ????

Dr. Michael Klaper is leading the Moving Medicine Forward (MMF) Initiative, aimed at improving the health of our population by providing nutrition education in medical schools. People expect their doctor to understand nutrition and digestion and their role in the root causes of disease. Yet, the effect of the patient’s daily diet as a primary cause of most of the diseases brought to Western physicians to be diagnosed and treated is seldom recognized. As a tragic consequence, the effective use of applied nutrition to arrest and reverse most chronic diseases is generally not taught, and thus its benefits are denied to the patient, despite its proven effectiveness, availability and affordability. As a result, millions of lives and trillions of dollars are needlessly lost each year, to the detriment of individuals, their families, their communities, and, ultimately, all of society.

Dr. Klaper brings to the MMF Initiative 46 years as a primary care physician, 35 of which centered upon applying plant-based nutrition to arrest and often reverse chronic disease. He is a graduate of the University of Illinois College of Medicine in Chicago. He received postgraduate training in internal medicine, surgery, anesthesiology, and orthopedics at University of British Columbia teaching hospitals in Vancouver and obstetrics at the University of California at San Francisco. He has practiced acute care medicine in Hawaii, Canada, California, Florida and New Zealand. Far more fulfilling to him is his current practice, focusing on health-promoting food and lifestyle choices to help people prevent the need for hospitalization and surgery. He has authored numerous articles on plant-based nutrition and is authoring a book on using plant-based medicine to arrest and reverse disease. A long-time radio host and a pilot, Dr. Klaper has served as nutrition advisor to NASA’s programs for space colonists on the Moon and Mars and on the Nutrition Task Force of the American Medical Students Association.

A shoutout to our sponsor, Complement. Developed by vegan dietitian Dr. Pamela Fergusson, and the NoMeat Athlete, Matt Frazier, Complement enables you to get your vitamin B12, vitamin D3, and the essential Omega 3 fatty acids (DHA & EPA) in a totally vegan form that you just spray into your mouth once a day and know that your already great diet now has the full complement of essential nutrients. Click here for more info and to order. Use the code MAINSTREETVEGAN for a 10% discount.

And now the good folks of Complement have a new product: Complement Plus. While everyone agrees that B12, vitamin D3, and the essential Omega 3 fatty acids are nutrients people eating plant-based diets (and a lot of other people besides) should not overlook, there are some other nutrients that it’s also easy to be short on, even with a well-chosen diet. To tackle this, Fergusson and Frazier joined forces with Joel Kahn, MD, and together developed Complement Plus, a supplement in tablet form that includes all the nutrients in Complement spray, along with zinc, iodine, selenium, and vitamin K2. Essential for blood clotting, healthy bones, and heart health, the only plant-food source of vitamin K2 is natto, an obscure, fermented soy food and one that is definitely an acquired taste (and smell). To get Complement Plus at a discount, simply go to www.alpineorganics.co (where you can order regular Complement, as well), but this time your discount code will be MAINSTREETVEGAN+.
