Ingrid Newkirk is the founder and president of PETA, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, the first international animal rights organization in the US, founded in 1980. PETA is the first to say there’s a lot more work to be done to reach a time when animals are liberated from human exploitation and abuse, but PETA wins victories every week, stopping travel companies from advertising rides on elephants and swim-with encounters with captive dolphins; ending animal tests by everyone from liquor and food companies to the federal government; helping clothing companies switch from animal skins to cruelty-free materials, and much more. They have the largest youth outreach program of any social movement organization, and conduct their society-changing activities to end speciesism via grassroots education, demonstrations, litigation, legislation, and welcome all hands on deck to bring about a just world for all living beings.
Blast from the past! ~ Earlier this year, Ingrid was on the show to talk to us about her latest book Animalkind — have a listen to the episode here: PETA’s Legendary Ingrid Newkirk
