Avery Kamila went vegan in 1991 after reading “Diet for a New America,” while she was a freshman at Syracuse University. For more than a decade she’s been writing about vegan food for the largest newspaper in Maine, and in 2018 a column she wrote caused the city schools to add vegan hot lunch options. Recently, she’s been researching the history of vegetarianism in her home state and uncovered a rich past full of meat-free and plant-based eating that has been ignored and buried for more than 100 years.

David L. Katz, MD, MPH is a preventive medicine specialist and globally recognized authority on lifestyle medicine. He is the founding director of Yale University’s Yale-Griffin Prevention Research Center (1998-2019); Past President of the American College of Lifestyle Medicine; President and Founder of the non-profit True Health Initiative; and Founder and CEO of Diet ID, Inc.

A shoutout to our sponsor, ComplementDeveloped by vegan dietitian Dr. Pamela Fergusson, and the NoMeat Athlete, Matt Frazier, Complement enables you to get your vitamin B12, vitamin D3, and the essential Omega 3 fatty acids (DHA & EPA) in an easy once-a-day spray. And now the good folks of Complement have a new product: Complement Plus, a supplement in tablet form that includes all the nutrients in Complement spray, along with zinc, iodine, selenium,  magnesium, and vitamin K2. Essential for blood clotting, healthy bones, and heart health, the only plant-food source of vitamin K2 is natto, an obscure, fermented soy food and one that is definitely an acquired taste (and smell).
